TV conservationist backs #TurtleTuesday

Iolo Williams shows support for UK’s leading marine charity’s push for more turtle tags

The Marine Conservation Society (MCS) is among 1,300 charities and businesses across the UK supporting #GivingTuesday – the global day of giving following Black Friday and Cyber Saturday.

MCS is taking #GivingTuesday a step further, turning it into #TurtleTuesday to help raise the profile of marine turtles as well as raising funds.

Head of Marketing at MCS, Nicola Greaves, says the charity hopes #TurtleTuesday will raise awareness of the plight of threatened turtles across the world and raise vital funds for turtle conservation and research: “We’ve set a target of £5,000 which will allow us to buy and attach a satellite tag to another turtle on the Turks & Caicos Islands (TCI), a British Overseas Territory. We’ve already helped tag 19 turtles in the TCI, including. 13 sub-adult greens, 2 adult greens and 4 adult hawksbills. The data collected, especially from the younger turtles, provides insights into behaviours not previously recorded, including developmental migrations, which helps us understand how TCI turtles are linked to nesting and feeding sites throughout the Caribbean.”

The MCS campaign is being supported by Welsh TV presenter, naturalist and BBC Springwatch and Autumnwatch regular, Iolo Williams. Iolo says: “Please support the Marine Conservation Society’ s appeal on #GivingTuesday to raise money for turtle conservation and research. By using satellite tags, we can learn so much more about these amazing animals and help conserve species that have been around since before the age of the dinosaurs.”

Followers on Facebook and Twitter can help to raise awareness of marine turtles during #GivingTuesday searching for, and sharing #TurtleTuesday and by adding a turtle Twibbon to their profile pictures at https://twibbon.com/Support/communications-2
