Jersey Kayak Adventures has attained the Gold Award from Green Tourism

Jersey Kayak Adventures

Jersey Kayak Adventures has attained the Gold Award from Green Tourism, the largest and most established sustainable certification programme in the world.

The Green Tourism Award means that a business works responsibly, ethically and sustainably, contributes to its community, works to reduce its impact on the environment and aims to be accessible and inclusive to all visitors and staff. Within the UK only three sea kayaking companies achieved this prestigious standard.

To obtain the Gold grading, companies are inspected every two years against a rigorous set of criteria, covering a range of areas such as energy and water efficiency, waste management, biodiversity and social involvement and communication. Jersey Kayak Adventures has been particularly keen to develop increased awareness of the huge range of marine and wildlife around Jersey which can be observed by sea kayak. Along with a range of initiatives staff are actively involved in marine and wildlife issues.

The innovative use of the marine environment to inform clients about wider issues such as the importance of buying locally sourced produce was scored particularly well by the Assessor.

Owner Derek Hairon said: “Jersey’s fantastic coastal environment is our shop window so we work hard to ensure we promote and protect it.”

Jon Proctor, Green Tourism Assessor said: “The activities and educational elements are outstanding and there is continuous development of their product. This is a great local team and all are well trained and professional and the experiences are of a high quality and worth a trip to Jersey.”
